How listing a pet works
Three steps. You keep control of the price and of who takes the animal.
Create the listing
Photos, breed, age, temperament and your price. Listings with six or more daylight photos and a specific description get far more genuine enquiries than short ones.
People near you find it
Buyers search by species and distance. Enquiries come from registered accounts and messaging stays in the app, so your phone number and address are not sitting in a public ad.
You arrange the rest
Vet the enquiries, meet in public, and handle payment and handover directly. We are not part of that transaction — which is why there is no commission and no fee on the sale.
The risks that actually cost people money
Most advice about selling a pet online skips the part where you get scammed. These are the patterns worth knowing before you list.
The overpayment scam
A buyer "accidentally" sends too much and asks for the difference back. The original payment is later reversed and you are out both the pet and the refund. Never refund an overpayment.
The fake shipping agent
A distant buyer insists on a courier who then demands crate, insurance or vet fees before delivery. The courier does not exist. Sell to people who can collect in person.
Reversible payments
Cheques, transfers from unverified accounts and "friends and family" payments can all be clawed back after the animal has gone. Cash on collection, counted in front of you, is still the safest.
Your details stay private
Messaging happens in the app. You can stop talking to someone without them ever having your number or knowing where you live — which a public classified ad cannot offer.
Buyers worth refusing
Anyone who will not collect in person, wants several animals at once, asks about breeding potential, pays without a single question about the pet, or pushes to complete today.
Put it in writing
A short written record of the price, what was disclosed about health and temperament, and the date of handover protects both sides if there is a dispute afterwards.
Real listings
Owners write their own descriptions and set their own price. Plenty list at zero.

Common questions
Is there an app to sell pets online?
Yes. Pets Home is an iOS and Android app for listing a pet. You add photos and a description, set your own price — including zero — and people searching in your area see the listing. It is free to download; creating a listing needs an active 7-day trial or a subscription.
Do you take a cut of the sale?
No. We are a listings and messaging platform, not a marketplace. We do not process payments, take commission, or get involved in the handover. Whatever price you set is between you and the person who takes the pet.
How much should I charge for my pet?
That is entirely your decision, and plenty of listings are set at zero. A modest figure filters out the least serious enquiries, but it is not a safeguard on its own — screening the buyer, asking for a vet reference and seeing where the animal will live matter far more than the number. See how to price your pet.
Is it safe to sell a pet online?
It is safer through an app than an open classified ad, because enquiries come from registered accounts and your phone number and address stay private until you share them. The risks that remain are payment fraud, timewasters and buyers who misrepresent themselves — so meet in public, never accept an overpayment or a cheque, and see the home before handing the animal over.
What pets can I list?
Dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, rabbits, birds, rodents such as hamsters and guinea pigs, reptiles, fish and horses. Each has its own category so people searching for that animal find your listing.
Is it legal to sell pets online?
Selling your own pet privately is generally lawful, but breeding and selling as a business is regulated. In England anyone breeding three or more litters a year needs a licence, and puppies and kittens must be sold direct by the breeder rather than through a third party. Several US states and cities also restrict pet sales. Check the rules where you live before advertising.
